Musevenomics in Motion: How Emyooga Transformed Lugazi’s Transport Sector
LUGAZI — The Lugazi Boda Boda Emyooga SACCO has emerged as a premier blueprint for grassroots economic transformation, expanding its membership from a modest 30 individuals at its inception in 2021 to over 1,450 active members today. This exponential growth highlights the deepening impact of the government's Presidential Initiative on Wealth and Job Creation (Emyooga) within the transport sector.
The Savings and Credit Co-operative Organization (SACCO), which now coordinates 82 distinct associations across the region, has successfully mobilized more than UGX 320 million in internal savings. Backed by strategic government revolving funds, the cooperative has disbursed over UGX 430 million in commercial and developmental loans to its members, directly fueling small-business expansion and stabilizing household incomes.
According to SACCO Chairperson Gitta Joseph, the cooperative has evolved into a critical financial lifeline for local riders. Beyond providing accessible credit, the institution has empowered members to diversify their investments, venture into alternative enterprises, and establish sustainable jobs outside the traditional transport business.
Area administrators point to the Lugazi Boda Boda cooperative as tangible proof of "Musevenomics" in action—demonstrating that structured community organizing combined with targeted state capitalization can effectively dismantle poverty at the municipality level. As the Emyooga program continues its nationwide rollout, the Lugazi model stands out as a benchmark for financial inclusion and wealth creation among informal sector workers.
